Stained Glass: A History
Jul 16th
No one actually knows when stained glass was first invented because it happened before people started recording history. However, some historians reckon that it was first used as a luxury in the homes of affluent Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was eventually acclaimed as an art form in the fourth century as Christians started to worship candidly and to construct elaborate churches in which to celebrate their religion.
On the other hand, some historians show that there are remnants in pre-Christian ruins that suggest that pagans employed stained glass in their rites. Although we will most likely never really learn the origins of stained glass, it is fairly certain that the spread of Christianity is immediately related to the increased of use of stained glass.
The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an important element in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the novel style of the St. Denis, France, where stained glass windows were used to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Unfortunately, most of the stained glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some entire windows on display in Europe.
Gothic style stained glass was composed of strong lines, but these increasingly went out of style as the Renaissance began. Throughout the Renaissance, artisans depicted better detail and more delicate colouring in order to add to the realism. Stained glass windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural features and some of the notable elements such as lead lines vanished. Because of the problems in showing the great detail essential to the Renaissance era, the old style, which was original stained glass almost died out.
Since stained glass was used by and large by the Catholic Church, much of the work was smashed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his split with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were damaged, but many of the glass making works were sabotaged too. However, religious strife was not the only cause of the decline of stained glass.
The style of the Baroque period was for more detailed murals, which necessitated the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were permitted to decay, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were produced. In the late 17th century, the public mood returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed interest in stained glass windows.
Artisans still tried to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to imitate the old leaden frames of medieval times. However, since the earlier methods had not been used for such a long time, they had grown to be forgotten and the artisans of the period were unable to reconstruct the exact designs used in Gothic stained glass.
During the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new kinds of stained glass. La Farge was interested in window designs, while Tiffany went into new areas like the Tiffany lamp shade.
These days, stained glass artists are not constricted by religious doctrines, although much of the work they do involves refurbishment. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

Why Life Coaching Is Getting Great Press
Apr 17th
Life Coaching is all the rage. Improving oneself is in and a medical definition of your problem is not so great to hear. The Life Coaching profession in America is booming. Therapist out life coaches in.
What Does A Life Coach Do
Generally speaking a life coach helps people empower themselves by learning to recognize key things about one’s feelings and thinking. There are a lot of discontented people in America and they would to get their lives revamped. The problem with this profession is that it is yet to be regulated and a formal set of education has not been established.
A life coach in unlike therapists because they do not rescue the deeply depressed they only wish to guide people whose lives are only slightly askew. In short life coaches are someone you work with in order to set your goals straight and for you to follow those goals. Life coaches do not delve on the past history of client’s life. Instead they tackle today and the future.
Who Get Coached?
For those macho men who hate getting into the emotional stuff life coaching is extremely popular. What’s more, because life coaching takes on a sports persona kids and families in general respond better to the programs. Life coaching is not all about talking, a guide gives certain activities where in there is equal cooperation.
The Downside of the Matter
The problem with life coaching is that it is an unregulated profession. Although a lot of life coaches have trainings and education regarding this field, still a number remains undisciplined in this arena. The life coaching profession has no basis for qualification, no unified approach as to what makes a life coach a life coach. Most of the guiding practices are unproven and no extensive studies have been done.
These unproven methods pose a certain risk because life coaches are not equipped to recognize if their clients have serious mental illness and therefore will have to see the appropriate physician. The guide might put him/herself and the client in danger.
The need for a cheerleader, a planner, a sort of life secretary if you will is a good premise, but what people really need is more than that. What if the life coach fails to see the signals that a certain person is not only in need of a pick me up but is actually in serious trouble? Experts are getting wary, they want mental professional to enter the field of life coaching because they are better able to analyze a person’s psyche and actually deliver the appropriate needs.
In the past, life coaching was used as a business motivational tool. Human resources see that high powered executives do get restless and might want to evaluate their lives. Life coaches are used to help those worried individuals see reality and appreciate what they have while going after what they are passionate for.
In Closing
Unlike popular belief, life coaching is not a quick fix. The session can take months and months of activities in order to really see ones self clearly in connection to reality. Life coaching is interactive, it is positive, it moves forward. These are the reasons why life coaching is actually good for people. The emphasis however is on whether a life coach is qualified to be one or not.

Wine Glasses
Jun 10th
The growing trend of popularity of wine has led to a boom in things to go with wine like corkscrews, stoppers, coolers, napkins, pouring baskets, decanters, candles, thermometers, bottle jackets, hydrometers and dozens of variations of each accessory from electric versions to manual ones. Needless to say, a lot of these accessories will be used until the novelty wears off and then left at the back of the cupboard.
However, there is one category of wine drinking accessory that no wine drinker should be without and that is wine glasses. They are indispensable, I am sure that everyone would agree. But the good thing about wine glasses is that they are decorative when they are not in use too. A set of six lead crystal wine glasses is a fine-looking sight. And a fine set of glasses correctly shaped for the wine you are drinking will greatly enhance your enjoyment of that wine.
This is because the shape of the glass is very influential on the drinker’s capacity to savour the taste and the aroma of wine. Therefore, it is necessary to use the correct glasses for the type of wine being drunk.
Red wines gain a lot from contact with air, so, aside from opening the bottle an hour before drinking it, you could decant it. The older and heavier the wine, the more air it must have. The next step is to serve the red wine in large glasses. This is not so as to be able to get as much wine in there as possible! A full, normal size bottle contains six servings no matter what glass you use, but a large glass allows you to swirl the wine around the glass, thereby increasing its contact with air.
A large tulip shaped glass is a good illustration of this kind of wine glass and any dark red wine would benefit from being drunk out of such a vessel. Try a Rioja or Bordeaux, for instance.
White wines, on the other hand, do not need to breathe for as long as red wines and are best served slightly chilled. Therefore, the wine glasses tend to have a smaller bowl and a longer stem. The bowl is smaller, because swirling is not essential and the stem is longer, so that the warmth from your hand does not warm the wine up prematurely. Try a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon or a German wine in these glasses.
Champagne glasses are called champagne flutes because the bowl is long and narrow, which allows the bubbles to float through more of the wine than if the bowl were short. This is beneficial for the wine, the taste and its appearance. The stem is also long as with other white wines to diminish heat transfer.
The last main kind of glass is the sherry schooner, which is also used for port. Sherry and port are both heavy reds and so need to breathe, which is one of the reasons why they should be decanted. However, a schooner has hardly any stem, because the warmth from your hand is required to keep the wine at the correct temperature.
Besides the shape of the bowl and the length of the stem, the next most important factor is the quality of the glass and its design. Some people like hand-blown glass and it can be very beautiful, but it also tends to be light and fragile. I prefer to use lead crystal glasses, which are a lot heavier and can take a deeper pattern.

The Beginnings of Aikido
Jan 1st
The name ‘Aikido’ is created by the permutation of three characters in the Japanese language. ‘Ai’, which means ‘joining’; ‘ki’, which means ‘spirit’ and ‘do’, which signifies ‘way’. These three characters actually sum up the essence of Aikido as a type of martial art: ‘the joining of the spirit to find the way’. It was only in the period from 1930′s to the 1940′s that the name Aikido was legally accepted as the name of this martial art variety.
Aikido uses methods that do not seriously injure or kill not like different types of martial art. The movements and skills being taught are just intended to divert attention or immobilize attackers. This is perhaps the explanation why most people prefer Aikido, because of its concentration on peace and tranquility as opposed to violence and conflict. In deed, Aikido teacher, Morihei Ueshiba, believes that to have power over hostility without causing any injury is the art of peace.
Ueshiba, who is also called Osensei, which signifies ‘Great Teacher’, formed Aikido from the doctrine of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. He incorporated the methods of the ‘yari’, the spear; the ‘juken’, the bayonet; and the ‘jo’, which is a short quarterstaff. But what ultimately distinguishes Aikido from other types of martial art is the fact that its proponents can strike while empty-handed. Proponents require no arms for their protection.
As a small child, he was greatly into physical fitness and conditioning. This was because of his oath to avenge his father’s enemies. In the end, his studies and actions led him to the discipline of the various martial arts. He studied a few of them. He even has qualifications for fencing, fighting with spears, etc. He has studied it all. This is possibly the explanation why Aikido is such a disparate and multi-disciplinary sort of martial art.
Yet despite his skill, he remained unhappy. He sensed that there was still something lacking. It was then that he turned to the religions. He studied under a religious guide, Onisaburo Deguchi of the sect named Omoto-kyo in Ayabe. Deguchi trained him to take care of his psychic development. He then pooled his spiritual beliefs and his mastery of the different martial arts and Aikido was formed.
His relationship with this charismatic spiritual leader Deguchi also smoothed the way for his introduction to the elite political and military people as a martial artist. Because of this relationship, he was able to establish Aikido and even pass on his knowledge to students, who have, in turn, created their own methods and techniques in Aikido.
Aikido is a blend of the different styles of jujitsu as well as some of the techniques of sword and spear fighting, of which Ueshiba was an expert. To obtain an general picture, Aikido combines the joint locks and throws of jujitsu and the techniques of the body necessary when fighting with swords and spears.
Oriental in origin, it was brought to the West by Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France in 1951. He introduced the Aikido techniques to students who were learning judo. In 1952, Tadashi Abe came to France as the official Aikikai Honbu spokesperson. Then in 1953, Kenji Tomiki toured throughout the United States while Koichi Tohei stayed in Hawaii for a full year where he set up a dojo. Aikido then broadened its influence in the United Kingdom two years after and in 1965, it reached Germany and Australia. At present, Aikido has centres all over the world.
