A Couple Of Facts About Archery
Nov 12th
People have been practicing archery for a minimum of four thousand years, but almost certainly for a lot longer than that. Sections of composite recurve bows have been found dating back to the second millennium BC, but the components that were found were the non-wooden, composite parts, usually of horn.
The wooden parts usually rotted away thousands of years before, but a wooden longbow from the same era was discovered in Somerset. Most probably, people had been using all wooden, single piece bows long before they started making complicated composite recurve bows.
The skill of archery has always fascinated mankind and, in spite of the fact that guns have made archery obsolete, it still fascinates people today, although nowadays archery is almost reserved used for sporting purposes. It is a thriving sport and hobby and is the national sport of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
If you are interested in practising archery, you will first have to make your mind up which kind of bow you prefer. Among other varieties, there are the longbow, recurve bow, reflex and decurve bows, deflex bow, pyramid bow and crossbow.
To a certain degree, the arrows are not interchangeable either. For example, a longbow can cast a three foot, heavy-gauge arrow, whereas a crossbow shoots a six inch bolt. The bows also had different uses although there was a certain degree of common ground.
For example, longbows were the heavy, rapid-firing armaments of their day, being able to lob a heavy, armour-piercing arrow hundreds of yards; whereas a short recurve bow was perfect for assault from horseback. Crossbows took less ability to use but were slower than a bow.
There are diverse kinds of arrow too. Historically, arrows were made of wood with a sharp metal tip, but these days arrows can be made of aluminium or carbon fibre. The arrowheads are different for different applications as well. A simple brass tip is sufficient for everyday shooting whereas a ferocious, slashing broadhead is used for killing.
The majority of people who take archery seriously use carbon fibre arrows these days which is the typical arrow shaft in use at the Olympic games. The flights are usually of bird feathers and are used to stabilize the arrow in flight to minimize wobble. Plastic flights are also to be had as they are less prone to damage.
The Welsh (and English) longbow was perhaps the most powerful hand bow extensively used. These longbows were typically six feet or more in length and made of one section of seasoned yew (or other woods). The draw weight of a Welsh longbow at the time of Henry VIII was between 160 -180 lbf and that would shoot a heavy three ounce arrow up to about 280 yards.
An explanation of the damage that one of these arrows could inflict was given by Gerald of Wales in the 12th century:
“… in the war against the Welsh, one of the men of arms was struck by an arrow shot at him by a Welshman. It went right through his thigh, high up, where it was protected inside and outside the leg by his iron cuirasses, and then through the skirt of his leather tunic; next it penetrated that part of the saddle which is called the alva or seat; and finally it lodged in his horse, driving so deep that it killed the animal”.
It took years of practice to draw and shoot one of these longbows bows accurately.

The Issues Pawlenty Believes In
Jul 18th
Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty is in the running for United States President in the GOP primary, however exactly what does he think about the issues facing this country? Let’s evaluate Pawlenty and what he would do for our nation.
He suggests if we can transform the state of mind of friends and family then we can easily proceed closer to ceasing abortions in the US. In Minnesota the governor was able to take on the “Women’s Right To Know” law which slows down abortion and helps inform women of all ages ahead of opting to terminate their pregnancy. He is endorsed by the Minnesota pro-life organization “Citizens Concerned for Life” as well as assigned a judge into the state Supreme Court. In latest promises he’s mentioned he wants to turned around Roe V. Wade and opposes fetal stem cell researching. Yet he realizes that a suspension only works from the courts.
He proposes the obvious way to repair the economic climate and the pending debt should be to reduce government waste and transform entitlement packages such as Social Security. He claims we must evaluate tax costs for corporations, people, capital gains rates and the tax rules completely rendering them pro-growth rather than an obstacle. Having said that he hasn’t taken a transparent position on the Flat-Tax, he states we ought to attempt to make rates more flat yet would not endorse for an entire Flat Tax system. He has been outspoken about Chairman Ben Bernanke of the FED for creating more money and devaluing the United States dollar.
He was addressed by some democrats in his state for making a one billion dollar budget shortfall in ’09 and substantial waste in the Minnesota. Dems blasted Pawlenty for making a 6.2 billion dollar budget deficit within the state, but Pawlenty denies there exists this kind of shortfall and says this is a bureaucratic calculation. Does Pawlenty do what he says on the troubles of taxation? He’s recently been charged by members with the DFL party in His home state of raising taxes on the State residents by use of what the republicans call “fees”. By way of example these fees were increased on cigarettes, educational costs, businesses, car parking tickets, marriage certificates, and a 2.7 million dollar raise in property taxes through ’03-’07.
Pawlenty is in opposition to healthcare reform and is convinced Minnesota ought to file suit over the federal government takeover. He likened Obamacare to being General Motors in the Nineteen seventies where it presumes what is good for one is good for all, he alternatively thinks healthcare ought to be more like an apple iphone where buyers can make the selections in their health care demands. If he were commander-in-chief he’d eliminate the federal health care law and relinquish the power back to individual states. Additionally he says you can find state programs that do assist those that are in need of sufficient health care services and rather than necessitating a mandate for all those individuals they should be offered more competitive treatment from the private marketplace.
He is in opposition to homosexual marriage and would not aid in overturning the Defense of Marriage Act. In Minnesota he endorsed a state prohibition on these types of marriages and assigned judges while governor that would never agree to any other concept of marriage. What’s more, he would certainly try to reestablish Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in the military and concurs with the soldiers that don’t agree to the legislation’s elimination.
Pawlenty is an ally for gun rights that happen to be legally bequeathed to US citizens within our constitution. As head of state he authorized the concealed guns bill for responsible people. He has persistently received A rankings by the National Rifle Association throughout the last 10 years for his work to guard the right to possess firearms.
He supported the no fly zone in Libya to offer the rebelling citizens an opportunity to get rid of Gaddafi, however he thinks The president acted too late. He is convinced that a little engagement within international locations across the Middle East will be crucial. A suggestion he made available would have been to retrieve ambassadors and plainly denounce dictators. He did say he would not set soldiers on the ground, but would investigate all the other solutions.

Stained Glass: A History
Jul 16th
No one actually knows when stained glass was first invented because it happened before people started recording history. However, some historians reckon that it was first used as a luxury in the homes of affluent Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was eventually acclaimed as an art form in the fourth century as Christians started to worship candidly and to construct elaborate churches in which to celebrate their religion.
On the other hand, some historians show that there are remnants in pre-Christian ruins that suggest that pagans employed stained glass in their rites. Although we will most likely never really learn the origins of stained glass, it is fairly certain that the spread of Christianity is immediately related to the increased of use of stained glass.
The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an important element in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the novel style of the St. Denis, France, where stained glass windows were used to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Unfortunately, most of the stained glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some entire windows on display in Europe.
Gothic style stained glass was composed of strong lines, but these increasingly went out of style as the Renaissance began. Throughout the Renaissance, artisans depicted better detail and more delicate colouring in order to add to the realism. Stained glass windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural features and some of the notable elements such as lead lines vanished. Because of the problems in showing the great detail essential to the Renaissance era, the old style, which was original stained glass almost died out.
Since stained glass was used by and large by the Catholic Church, much of the work was smashed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his split with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were damaged, but many of the glass making works were sabotaged too. However, religious strife was not the only cause of the decline of stained glass.
The style of the Baroque period was for more detailed murals, which necessitated the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were permitted to decay, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were produced. In the late 17th century, the public mood returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed interest in stained glass windows.
Artisans still tried to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to imitate the old leaden frames of medieval times. However, since the earlier methods had not been used for such a long time, they had grown to be forgotten and the artisans of the period were unable to reconstruct the exact designs used in Gothic stained glass.
During the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new kinds of stained glass. La Farge was interested in window designs, while Tiffany went into new areas like the Tiffany lamp shade.
These days, stained glass artists are not constricted by religious doctrines, although much of the work they do involves refurbishment. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

Buddy Roemer Officially Running in 2012
Jun 8th
Former one-term Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer was raised in on a cotton plantation in northern Louisiana close to Bossier City. Roemer jump started his political career by running for the House as a democrat in 1981 and holding that seat until 1988. While in the House of Representatives Roemer consistently went against the Democratic Party on policy issues and tended to support the republicans and the Reagan administration. Roemer describes himself as a “Methodist boy” and attends church on Sundays. There he met his wife Scarlett, who plays the piano for the chapel at a neighboring church.
At odds with his party in the House of Representatives, Buddy decided to try and take a shot at running for governor in his home state of Louisiana for the 1988 gubernatorial election. Louisiana at the time was a heavily democratic state run by many conservative democrats, allowing Roemer to be with more like-minded party members. However Roemer had to challenge the sitting democratic governor, Edwin Edwards, in the primary. So he started a campaign which he effectively named “Slay the Dragon” and exposed Edwards as a corrupt official. Roemer won the democratic primary by five points and was elected the next governor of Louisiana. In 1991 Buddy Roemer switched to the Republican Party after being pressured by the George H. Bush administration. As a new republican, Roemer had to face David Duke in the Louisiana republican primary for the 1992 governor’s election. He lost it to Duke, allowing Duke to run against ex-governor Edwin Edwards who sought another term. Edwards ultimately ended up winning that election in 1992.
Roemer recently gave a speech to conservatives in Iowa about his ideas and background in hopes to get Iowans more familiar with him and his candidacy for president in 2012. He underscored his successes as the governor in Louisiana illustrating how he had cleaned up the air and reduced harmful toxins by 41%, reduced the unemployment rate by half, and cut financial waste from the state budget. Moreover he talked about his experience in the House of Representatives and how he defied his party by working closely with republicans and Ronald Reagan.
He claims a major issue of his in 2012 will be campaign finance reform. To show his seriousness on this issue Roemer will not accept more than $100 donations from contributors for his campaign and refuses to take PAC money. He says elections should be about ideas and not who can raise the largest amount of cash to take out their opponents. Twenty years ago in Louisiana, Roemer was ousted from his position as governor by two candidates who ultimately served prison time on corruption charges. Both candidates took special interest money which Roemer argues limits the voice of the American people and can lead to electing dishonest politicians.
On March 7th Roemer officially entered the race after forming his exploratory committee. And in his official statement he denounced the system of Washington D.C. and says politicians rely too heavily on special interest money. Politicians aren’t doing their job because they are too involved in secret behind the scenes handshakes with corporations, PACs, and lobbyists. Buddy is currently the only candidate who will not be taking money from any group or organization.

Pawlenty Will Run For President In 2012
May 31st
Pawlenty officially announced his plans to run for president in Iowa last week getting out of that testing the waters phase in which most candidates began their candidacy. With Huckabee out and Palin still on the fence, Pawlenty could win over the tea party voters hearts. With many high-profile candidates out of the way Pawlenty’s chances at securing the nomination are much higher.
With two gubernatorial wins in Minnesota, which is often referred to as a swing state, Pawlenty shows electability at the national level. He is married to Mary Pawlenty and they are raising their two daughters, Anna and Mara, together. Pawlenty was born a Roman Catholic, but converted to being Baptist to match his wife’s faith. Pawlenty is a social conservative and now a devout evangelical Christian; he regularly attends Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie.
In a statement Pawlenty showed his disdain for the Roe v. Wade decision and said it was the wrong choice. He believes abortion is morally wrong and implemented a twenty-four hour ban on abortions while governor of Minnesota. He disagrees with the recent decision of repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in the military and said as president he would reinstate the law. Furthermore he has stated that homosexuals shouldn’t have the right to marry or gain marital status under civil unions.
Pawlenty is also fiscally conservative, while governor of Minnesota for eight years he accomplished major budget cuts. In his first term as governor he balanced a four billion dollar state budget deficit without raising any taxes. In his subsequent term he managed to wipe out a 2.7 billion dollar deficit by cutting government spending, shifting money around in various state funds, and cutting programs. His fiscal stance on major budget cuts triggered a government shutdown in 2005 that lasted ten days.
Similar platform candidates, such as a Bachman and Palin run, may ultimately end up splitting votes causing a lesser known candidate to win the republican nomination. With all the bickering over who will ultimately win in 2012 and just how ugly the race could be, Pawlenty reminds republicans to follow Ronald Reagan’s 11th commandment in which he declared that republicans shouldn’t speak ill of each other.

The Signs Of Love In The Zodiac
May 9th
Many people think that the stars can supply a lot of knowledge about ourselves, our past and our future. This information can include how, when, and with whom we are most liable to fall in love, although it can go a lot further than that too. This is not to say that astrology is the same as a chart of your destiny, so although the one you love may not be a textbook match for you in astrological terms, it does not mean that you should not start a relationship.
There are a few methods by which you can start to understand the universal forces that draw someone to their partner or anyone else. If you learn to interpret or even master these forces, you will also learn how to make any relationship work better and discover yourself at the same time as well.
One of the best ways to begin, is to find a horoscope of yourself that seems fairly truthful. In this way you will discover a writer of horoscopes that you can trust. Not everyone is at the same level of advancement and this goes for horoscope writers too. Some are novices some are experts, most are in the middle and some are charlatans.
Once you have your own pretty truthful horoscope, get one done by the same person for the one you love or would like to get on with better. Try not to read too much into what you imagine you know until you know that you know it. For example, you might be a Capricorn (a ram), so it might sound logical to be weary of a Leo (a lion) as the two animals are enemies in real life. But learn more; do not jump to conclusions.
You can start to compare the two zodiac signs for complementary and contrasting qualities, likes and dislikes though. You can go into as much depth of detail about the ideal zodiac mate for you as you like. However, be very suspicious of letting the zodiac reading rule your life and decision-making. Do not give up on someone just because their horoscope seems to conflict with yours. Rather, use the details you read about the other person to connect better with them.
There really are rather a lot of very informative books and web sites to help you on your quest to work out the particulars of your zodiac match. So do some investigation and have some fun with it. However, be prepared to unearth a few surprises. You will probably find that the author of the book or web site is closer to understanding you by your zodiac sign than you would ever have assumed, which means that the author is almost certainly fairly correct with your companion too.
Once you have been investigating the zodiac for a while, you will look at people differently and you will be very curious about other peoples’ star signs. You will want to know whether you can guess a person’s sign of the zodiac and whether you can forecast his or her reactions.

Roger Williams Texas 2012 Senate Candidate
Apr 22nd
Roger Williams, former Secretary of State, is preparing to join the battle for the TX United States senate next year, thus far he has collected support from many leading political figures, such as ex president George Bush who’s supported his run. Like with the majority of the GOP contenders he believes in a well balanced spending budget and states that he would approve an amendment that will make it illegal for the federal government to spend above the approximated budget for the financial year.
Williams encouraged reducing the federal government by method of employing enormous reform to entitlement packages which include social security and Medicare health insurance. To deal with the troubles with social security, Williams would like to privatize it to get your money out of the economically reckless government and make investments with those funds in the business marketplace. Medicare receivers need to be granted a voucher as a way to select their medical care within the private arena in an effort to locate the least expensive and most valuable alternatives to health care.
Williams approves of both equally a flat and in addition a FairTax strategy and is convinced either technique is greater than the current messy tax rules that delivers loopholes for paying taxes and in addition sets up barriers to business organizations. A flat tax will institute a predetermined percentage that every person pays on salary and eradicates the problematic tax rules altogether. The FairTax would eliminate all federal, state and other taxes and put into action a product sales tax where you spend the money for taxes on bought goods.
As with all Texas senate challengers inside the state the former Secretary of State discusses the dilemma of unlawful immigration by saying we have to boost border protection and create a hard stance on workers that come across the international border unlawfully, his political campaign web page doesn’t mention precisely how he would do this. Williams pushes harder by stating those which line-up and journey to the United States legitimately ought to be mandated to learn English so we need to help to make English our official tongue for the nation.
Roger Williams takes up social conservative issues as well and states he’s unquestionably been Pro life and believes that when an egg is concepted life begins and doesn’t stop right up until purely natural death, he declares he would not want anyone ‘messing’ with Second amendment privileges, and he declares a marriage is between just one male and female. He would take a stand to combat any piece of legislation that attempts to transform marriage.
Williams could have a substantial support system simply because he is a well known figure when compared to some of the other republican challengers for the position. He was initially employed by Perry for the position as Secretary of State in ’05 until he handed in his resignation in 2007 to explore other career opportunities. He might hold a good early edge if he is able to boost cash for his election run.

What Wildlife Will You Find In Ireland?
Jul 21st
Although Ireland is home to only 30 native land animals, those animals make for fascinating experiences in the five national parks around Ireland. There are no large predators, so visitors can explore and experience the wildlife with relative safety. The diverse bird life makes Ireland a favourite with birdwatchers as well.
The biggest naturally occurring mammal you will find in Ireland is the Red Deer. Unique to Ireland, these magnificent animals can be seen in Killarney National Park, Glenveagh, Ballycroy and the Wicklow Mountains parks. Other mammals seen regularly include hare, badgers, the red fox, pine martens, the Irish stoat, mink, otter and fallow deer. Connemara National Park features the Connemara Ponies. Although considered a domestic animal, they wander the countryside in herds in Connemara, making a distinct impression on visitors to the park.
With over 100 bird species native to Ireland, birdwatchers will enjoy the national parks’ offerings. Raptors include owls, peregrine and falcon, with the Golden Eagle having been successfully reintroduced into Glenveagh National Park after it’s disappearance from Ireland in 1912. Golden plover, ravens and many other species can be found throughout the Irish countryside.
There are of course zoos and aquariums that offer visitors and residents the opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife. Dublin Zoo is home to Siberian tigers, rhinoceros, wolves, gorillas, orang-utans, chimpanzees, snow leopards, hippo and lion. Belfast Zoo showcases a similar variety of animals, including Asian elephants, white tigers and spectacled bears and more.
Belfast also has the Exploris Aquarium with interactive discovery pools and a deep water open sea tank featuring the interesting creatures of the deep. Many of the sea creatures seen here can be found off Ireland’s coast, where whale and dolphin are spotted at various times of the year. The Seal Sanctuary, also in Belfast, offers a fascinating insight into these clever creatures as well.
For the more adventurous, Fota Wildlife Park allows visitors to wander with free-roaming animals (though not the carnivorous kind). Situated over 70 acres on Fota Island in Cork Harbour, this wildlife park specialises in endangered or threatened species, some of which, like the Rothschilds Giraffe and European Bison, may never be seen in the wild again. Lemur, emu, various monkeys, kangaroos, red panda, penguin and even cheetah may be seen at Fota Wildlife Park.
Although Irish wildlife may not seem to offer a thrilling adventure, the lack of large predators means that visitors can walk or cycle through the national parks in relative safety. This affords visitors the opportunity to see smaller animals that make for interesting viewing, particularly in their natural habitat. For the more unusual, and dangerous, animals, a visit to one of the zoos or the wildlife park will certainly entertain and educate you.

Memories Of A Champion: Alexis Arguello
Jun 14th
Nicaraguan boxing legend Alexis Arguello was found dead of an apparent suicide in his home in early July. At the time of his death, he served as mayor of Nicaragua’s capital city.
Known for his class outside the ring as much for his tenacity inside the ring, hes best known to casual fight fans for his epic war in’82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Though Arguello would lose via–th round knockout (amid some controversy due to an apparent mystery drink offered to Pryor by his trainer Panama Lewis) it was a thrilling toe to toe battle that even the most knowledgeable boxing experts remember fondly to this day. Ring Magazine not only named it Fight of the Year, but later would dub it Fight of the Decade. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:
“It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did.”
While the first Pryor fight may have brought him the most mainstream notoriety, boxing cognoscenti are aware that Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport. Arguello never lost a fight at-0 pounds and would end his career with an astounding 82-8 record with 65 knockouts and championships in three different weight classes. At the time, he was only the sixth man in boxing history to hold title belts at three different weights.
Ironically, Arguellos career didn’t get off to a good start and he lost his debut in’68 via first round TKO. After that, he seldom lost again. He was at his best against his toughest adversaries including Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. Bob Arum remembered him not only as a great fighter, but as a great man:
“Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I’ve ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter. He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person.”
The articulate, intelligent Arguello was also a quote machine on the fight game and how champions should conduct themselves. Here, he speaks of his attitude toward his opponents:
“Of course after the fight you want to make sure that you’re okay and so is the other guy, its a brotherhood in there, so you want to make sure everyone is okay after the war is over.”
Arguello didn’t fight for his first title until he’d had 58 fights, and would frequently admonish boxers who didn’t show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:
“When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud.”
Most significantly, Arguello loved boxing and sought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:
“I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it.”
While the modest, dignified Arguello would never say it himself, that was for from a one sided debt–he also gave immeasurably to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness.

Wine Glasses
Jun 10th
The growing trend of popularity of wine has led to a boom in things to go with wine like corkscrews, stoppers, coolers, napkins, pouring baskets, decanters, candles, thermometers, bottle jackets, hydrometers and dozens of variations of each accessory from electric versions to manual ones. Needless to say, a lot of these accessories will be used until the novelty wears off and then left at the back of the cupboard.
However, there is one category of wine drinking accessory that no wine drinker should be without and that is wine glasses. They are indispensable, I am sure that everyone would agree. But the good thing about wine glasses is that they are decorative when they are not in use too. A set of six lead crystal wine glasses is a fine-looking sight. And a fine set of glasses correctly shaped for the wine you are drinking will greatly enhance your enjoyment of that wine.
This is because the shape of the glass is very influential on the drinker’s capacity to savour the taste and the aroma of wine. Therefore, it is necessary to use the correct glasses for the type of wine being drunk.
Red wines gain a lot from contact with air, so, aside from opening the bottle an hour before drinking it, you could decant it. The older and heavier the wine, the more air it must have. The next step is to serve the red wine in large glasses. This is not so as to be able to get as much wine in there as possible! A full, normal size bottle contains six servings no matter what glass you use, but a large glass allows you to swirl the wine around the glass, thereby increasing its contact with air.
A large tulip shaped glass is a good illustration of this kind of wine glass and any dark red wine would benefit from being drunk out of such a vessel. Try a Rioja or Bordeaux, for instance.
White wines, on the other hand, do not need to breathe for as long as red wines and are best served slightly chilled. Therefore, the wine glasses tend to have a smaller bowl and a longer stem. The bowl is smaller, because swirling is not essential and the stem is longer, so that the warmth from your hand does not warm the wine up prematurely. Try a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon or a German wine in these glasses.
Champagne glasses are called champagne flutes because the bowl is long and narrow, which allows the bubbles to float through more of the wine than if the bowl were short. This is beneficial for the wine, the taste and its appearance. The stem is also long as with other white wines to diminish heat transfer.
The last main kind of glass is the sherry schooner, which is also used for port. Sherry and port are both heavy reds and so need to breathe, which is one of the reasons why they should be decanted. However, a schooner has hardly any stem, because the warmth from your hand is required to keep the wine at the correct temperature.
Besides the shape of the bowl and the length of the stem, the next most important factor is the quality of the glass and its design. Some people like hand-blown glass and it can be very beautiful, but it also tends to be light and fragile. I prefer to use lead crystal glasses, which are a lot heavier and can take a deeper pattern.
