Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 2.0: Survival of the Fittest With Google’s Universal Search
Jan 14th
When Darwin proposed the Theory of Evolution, he used it to explain the development of species. The idea of natural selection, that the strong survive and the weak die off, has been integrated into the modern understanding of biology, but the organic world is not the only place where this survival of the fittest takes place. Quite the contrary: natural selection dominates the online business realm as well. However, while circumventing biology can be nearly impossible, utilizing the online marketplace to stay on top does not have to be as difficult.
The key is to understand how to survive. While companies around the world launch websites, only a select few make it to the big time. These company websites receive millions of hits and show up front and center on major search engines. In fact, being featured on the front page of a Google search results list is the best way to stay ahead of electronic natural selection. That task, however, is easier said than done.
Internet searches traditionally have displayed results through a ranking system. This system worked by examining the content of the page and rating its overall relevance to the search being performed. The search engine would then present the designated sites by their rank. There are certain drawbacks to such a straightforward approach, though, since this type of ranking only utilizes standard websites. In order to create a more comprehensive search experience, Google drastically revamped its searching capabilities in 2007 with the concept of Universal Search.
Opening up searches, Universal Search includes blended results listed by comparative ranking. Comparative ranking works similarly to traditional ranking, by analyzing the content and determining its relevancy to the search being performed. However, comparative ranking takes the process a step further, weighing websites alongside other online mediums, such as photos, videos, blogs, press releases and more. This goes hand in hand with blending, which provides search results for the full gamut of online mediums cohesively on a single page.
Google’s Universal Search, In this way, has changed the way online prowess must be achieved. Now, companies and website developers must utilize a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 2.0 approach, focusing not only on content with keyword rich copy, but also optimizing all of their digital media, thus showing they are the best “fit” with a strong, multimedia approach. By incorporating rich media like images and video, websites can increase their comparative ranking, being strong enough to overpower a greater variety of sources.
SEO marketers must diversify into a number of areas they may not have considered before.
* Blogs mentioning your website can now be used as marketing tools to drive traffic.
* Press releases are listed in the blended news results; used properly, this can be one of your most effective tools. News is ranked chronologically as well as by relevance; by keeping your website prominently featured through regular press releases, you can optimize your search engine results.
* Images are more important than ever before, and tagging them correctly ensures your site gets the proper recognition.
* Including your company website in local online directories gives you one more way to improve corporate visibility.
The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 2.0 approach is the only way to achieve internet dominance, ensuring online business survival at all costs.

Secret Revealed: How the Google Search Engine Really Works
Nov 30th
While we don’t often think about – or even care – how the Google search engine works, it is very important for web publisher who is using search engine optimization, or natural search marketing for their online business to understand the basic principles that drive Google.
There are three main parts to Google: Googlebot, The Indexer, and the Query Processor. Each of these three parts is crucial to online businesses, believe it or not. Let’s take a deep look at each of these Google elements to see how they work.
Googlebot is the search engine robot that comes to your website and spiders your pages.
It actually works more like a web browser by calling a server and requesting pages, and downloading them – just as you do when you open your web browser, type in an web page address, and the page loads.
Googlebot, anyway, is run by numerous computers and performs this task much faster than one user could on their home or work personal computer. Googlebot also doesn’t know whether a website exists or not until a URL is put into their Add URL form, or they find a link points to that website on another web page.
When Googlebot visits a page, they take all the links from that page, put them in a queue for crawling, and just repeat this process over and over again. Once Googlebot has found a link, and downloaded the page, it hands that page off to the Indexer.
The Indexer stores the pages in Google’s Index Database. The Index then sorts all of the pages in its data base, alphabetically, by looking at all of the keywords on the pages. The Indexer does not pay any attention to what Google calls stop words, such as is, on, or, why, how, etc. It just pays attention to more important keyword type words.
The Indexer, after Indexing pages, waits for the Google Query Processor to ask it for a list of documents. A keyword is given by the Query Processor, which in turn asks the Indexer for a list of websites that contain that keyphrase.
The Indexer then supplies the Query processor with a list of the documents, and the Query processor presents the documents to the user who requested the keyword.
As you see, each element is important to the others. It all starts with the Googlebot finding your web page link on another page, or by you going to Google and using the Add form to list your website.

What Exactly Is Web 3.0?
Nov 23rd
If you’re familiar with social media than you know that the social media revolution has often be referred to as Web 2.0. Said another way, the ability to communicate in real time via the web through networks of like-minded people is considered the second iteration of the Internet.
In recent months I have heard countless people talking about what’s next for the world wide web. The reality is that Web 3.0 is already here and this is evidenced by those websites who are taking user behavior into consideration when defining an online user experience.
Web 3.0 is all about improving the experience of web site browsers and helping them make the right decisions quickly. Now that the Internet has expanded significantly and there are billions of pages of information, getting through that information effectively has become a challenge.
Enter behavioral data and the concept of Web 3.0. In the next iteration of the web world, users’ activities are being tracked closely. These activities include a range of behaviors like their on-site behavior, purchase history, order frequency, size, and quantity as well as tastes and preferences they have exhibited while surfing the Net.
Web 3.0 goes beyond real time data by allowing online merchants and other websites the ability to integrate existing data into user profiles. For site that already have behavioral data, generating meaningful predictive models become even easier. Whether you’ve responded to a one time promotion or have consistently bought from a web site, this information is used to shape recommendations and marketing messages via email and online.
Web 3.0 intelligence anonymously and securely analyzes every customer and web browser to your website. Learning patterns and the context that drives buying decisions will be used to create a highly personalized user experience for each individual. This may be a point of concern for all of you privacy buffs out there but the reality is that web sites track user behavior today and the information becomes more and more sophisticated.
From my perspective, I’m not at all concerned about privacy. In fact, I welcome the level of sophistication and customization that can be provided from a Web 3.0 world. I think the issue for debate is how this information is use and whether or not it is used with your permission. I feel that all users must give permission to be tracked in this way and the information should only be used to improve my browsing and buying experience. If used in that manner, I’m okay with it.
Web 3.0 is upon us. As web sites continue to collect and use more of your behavioral data, your online buying experience is going to change. One can argue if this change is for the better. However, I believe that it can dramatically improve your buying experience and improve the way retailers market products and services.

Improve Web Site Rankings With On Page Optimization Techniques
Oct 26th
When thinking about search engine optimization and where to begin, think about on-page optimization. Although off-page optimization is essential for improving your Google rankings, on-page techniques can be used to build a strong SEO foundation and support good results on Yahoo!, MSN, and other major search portals.
Below are a few helpful search engine optimization strategies you can use right now to make your web site more accessible to search engines and as a result, improve your search engine rankings.
Optimize Your Website URL. If you have not yet picked a domain name for your website, do not try to purchase yourkeyword.com. Rather, pick a name that will be memorable and is something you want to build your company or brand around. You do not want to limit your options too severely. That said do try to include your main broad keyword into your URL.
Optimize Your Page Title, H1 and H2 Tags. Create a title that is relevant to your site content and which is no more that 60 characters in length. The reason you want to limit the size of your title is because larger titles cannot be fully displayed on search engine results pages. The reason why the title is so important is because it gives you an opportunity to display your keywords first.
The first headline that appears on your site should include your most important keywords. It is best to have your title display with an H1 tag. An H1 tag provides emphasis and signals each search engine that you deem the content as important. Other titles on your web page should be displayed using an H2 or H3 tag, indicated once again, the importance of the keywords being used.
Do Not Forget To Optimize Your Meta Tags. Search engine optimization professionals continue to question the true value of meta tags. I know that meta tags are based on a number of core tags but can include many more. The core tags are for a page title, description and keywords. These tags are less important than in years past but should still be included.
Today, meta tags are used as a starting point and a reference point for search engine crawlers. Your meta tags need to be aligned to your page content and also include your keywords. This creates consistency, something that search engine spiders yearn for. So make sure to fully develop your description and keywords. I suggest limiting your keywords to no more than twelve and limiting your description to about 150 words maximum.
Optimize your keyword density for Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. Creating a keyword rich content page is essential but do not get carried away. Your keyword density should be between three and five percent in order to appeal to all major search engines. Some people believe that you could go as high as six percent for Yahoo! optimization but Google seems to like pages that have a smaller keyword density. In addition to keyword density, focus on H1 and H2 tags and place keywords at the beginning, middle, and end of your web page. This variety is helpful when signaling search engines as to the keywords that are important to your web page.
Varying Your Keyword Phrase. Each time you list your keyword phrase, change it up a bit. Rather than stuffing your site with the same keyword phrases again and again, use keyword variety. One way to do this is to add a word or two before your keyword phrase and after it. Creating variety is critical because it shows each search engine that your site is really about the core content you are promoting.
The most important part of any search engine optimization campaign is to make your site appear natural, present valuable content, and follow on-page optimization best practices. If you use the above suggestions as a guide, you will be well on your way to a fully optimized website.

How To Reach The Top Of Major Search Engine With Your Website
Oct 25th
Getting started online is now easier than ever. When I began doing business online I quickly developed an understanding of html and web design. The process of creating new web pages and promoting the code to a live server was complicated at first but got easier with time. Once I was online however, I quickly figured out that having a good design sense wasn’t enough to give me top rankings.
So I did what most people do, I began my quest for information about search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, and applied as much as I could. I spent thousands of additional dollars rebuilding my website and countless hours tweaking, updated, and changing things until I was well positioned for higher rankings.
Once I redesigned my website and applied the on page optimization techniques from reading dozens of web pages, blogs, and websites, I had a pretty good understanding of what I did wrong and how I could impact my search rankings. With the design tweaks I had made and a little extra effort, I was able to boost my position by about 40 spots. I was so impressed that I got hooked on learning more.
Even though I only saw moderate results with what I learned, it was enough to get me hooked. I finally understood that search results could be influenced not only by how you design your website, but through dozens of other factors. Some of these factors you control through your website and other via building connections throughout the web between authoritative websites and your own.
The most valuable lesson I learned about doing business on the web, from all my research, was that the most important aspect is choosing the right niche for your site. As a factor of segmentation, you also need to choose the right keywords to optimize for. Depending on the level of competition for that keyword or keyword phrase, the promise of top rankings might be easy, or for the most competitive keywords, extremely difficult.
Another great tip when it comes to building a website, poised for number one rankings, is to keep it simple. Don’t use flash and don’t get exotic. Keep your website design basic and use functionality that is intuitive and easy to understand. This not only makes it easy for your browsers, but also ideal for search engine spiders.
After you have created your website, the next step is to make everyone aware that your site exists. By creating site popularity, your website will climb in the search results. A key factor is the Google PR of the sites linking to your site. They, in essence, transfer some of their value to you, influencing your search ranking.
In internet marketing, there are tons of professed gurus who can show you the latest techniques for number one rankings. Based on my more than ten years of marketing experience and search engine optimization efforts, Id rather keep things simple.
The good news is that although these techniques take time, they work. No more searching for the silver bullet ” keep things simple. Additionally, be sure to research software or services that can help you along the way. Don’t be afraid to get help and persist until you achieve your goal. It worked for me and it can work for you too.

Learn Why SEO is Not A Science!
Sep 27th
Anyone who tells you that SEO is a science is simply wrong. If SEO was a science, we would all be millionaires because many of us would have cracked the code on how to make your website rank number one on Google.
SEO is an art in many ways, because there are many ways to do it successfully, and the exact way of ranking high is often elusive. Here are some reasons why SEO is not a science:
1. No one knows what the secrets to doing SEO the right way is: No one knows what the secret sauce is. If you think there are people who know the exact way to rank high, you are wrong. The algorithm that Google uses changes many times a month, so trying to crack the code does not work.
2. Ranking high is based on quality not quantity: If ranking high was based on quantity, people would spend thousands of dollars trying to get crappy links (and many people still do that), just so they can beat their competition. Ranking high is really dependent on many things, but focusing on quality of inbound links makes a big difference.
3. Google is hard to make a fool of: There are many websites out here which are burnt by Google every month. Most of these websites either have very spammy content or simply try to spam their way into ranking high. Because Google can be very difficult to deal with when you use the wrong techniques, SEO is not a science, otherwise everyone would be fooling Google all the time.
4. Most people who take the wrong approach fail: There are thousands of SEO agencies selling links for 10 cents a piece from their own network of websites. What they do not know is that the links pass no link juice, because their Page Rank has been burnt to the ground. Anything which tries to relate SEO to a science fails miserably.
5. Ranking high mostly is not an easy task: If you can rank high easily, so can everyone else. This would totally defeat the purpose of having search engines. Therefore, steps have been taken to make sure people cannot game the search engines, which means that ranking high is not a science.
