Why Use Search Engine Optimization?
Few successful businesses who get most of their clients from the Internet can survive unless people can find them in search engines. Why? Because more than eighty percent of users surfing the web utilize them to find their websites. If someone enters YOUR product or service into one of these engines, you want your website to pop up right near the top. Search engine optimization (or SEO) helps ensures this happens, so you have to think about it when designing the homepage for your web-based business.
What is search engine optimization? SEO is basically convincing search engines that your site is what users want to see when looking for your product. Let’s say you’re trying to sell used vacuums. When someone goes to a search engine to find used vacuums to buy, you want to be the first site they look at. It may help to find a professional to do it for you, but there are some simple things you can do to get your website higher on these searches.
First consideration: You have to have a SUPER website! No web business can survive without one, so why lead people to your site if there’s nothing to it? If you have a good site then it will be much easier to naturally get search engines to rank you high in searches.
Second, find out what key words you should have associated with your site. A keyword is simply a word or phrase a web-user might type into a search engine. You need to find out what keywords people are likely to type into an engine’s bar when they are looking for your services. An obvious way to do this is to simply think about what your website is about. If you are selling secondhand shoes, the words “Secondhand shoes” can make up a suitable keyword.
You will also want to do some research as well. There are some free tools available online to help you find out which keywords actual people type everyday. Once you have a list of keywords you want to focus on, you should try to tweak your site so that these words are featured prominently in it. If a search engine discovers that a keyword is the focus of your site, your site will be placed higher on searches based on those words.
Which leads us to the third topic to think about: your titles and meta tags. It is crucial that your most important keyword is placed in the title and header of your website. Another thing you can do is alter the “meta tags” of your website. A meta tag basically gives information about your website that isn’t always visible to web browsers. You can enter your keywords in a meta tag that some search engines use to discover keywords that are appropriate for your site. If you don’t know how to alter titles or meta tags, search for HTML resources on the Internet.
Fourth consideration: Make sure your website’s text mentions the keyword repeatedly! If you never talk about a keyword, no search engine is going to think that it’s very important to your site. You can overdo it, but a frequently used keyword is seen as important to search engines. How important can “refurbished pianos” be to your site if you hardly ever mention them? Hopefully you made a great website with a lot of great content so getting your keywords in there will be a no-brainer.
If you’re going to try and optimize your own site, these steps will be a good launching board. A few small changes might make your site more prominent compared to competing businesses.
