When you start something new it is very hard to know ahead of time what tools and knowledge you’re going to need. Combine this with a natural resistance towards spending money on an unknown venture and you’ll likely wind up lacking something that’s essential to your business.

The funny thing is when I was a traditional entrepreneur, I spent thousands and thousands of dollars a month on rent, employees, marketing and so much more BUT when I began a home based business…..I got cheap!

O.K, not totally true but there is a tendency to “hold back” and not spend money and I can understand being careful but the reality is you need to make right decisions for your business and this often means spending in the right areas when it comes to tools, services, marketing and lead generation AND the right business model.

As an example, my first attempt developing an online business utilized cheap domain names (.biz, .info) and web hosting which impeded my ability to have a professional looking web site. The truth is I felt overwhelmed entering a new industry and market. There was simply too much to know and I didn’t know where to get the right information to make my business a success. When things looked liked they weren’t working I often times switched gears or abandoned that idea but this meant a loss of time and money. It took some time but I began to turn the corner.

Knowing When And Where To Ask For Help… This is big key and you need to find the person(s) that will help you get where you want to get WITHOUT all the HYPE and GURU stuff as this tends to only empty your pockets and has little to do with putting money into your bank account.

Simply take a step back and look at your business with “objective” eyes. Does the model make sense and what is your expected outcome? If you’re building an M.LM don’t over think it but realize you may need to apply yourself for 3-5 years in order to build a sizeable organization that pays well.

If you’re into affiliate marketing and have a gross commission of $30 per sale; analyze that and realize you will need to sell 100 of them in order to earn $3,000 monthly (less marketing expenses). The above is not good or bad; simply look at this from a business point of view as I did for many years in my traditional and offline businesses.

Yes…great advice but what does this have to do with tools, your mindset and making money?

Your mindset can be destroyed if you see failure and after failure and weeks, months and even years go by without the success you are dreaming about. So, look at your business and decide if it’s the right “vehicle” to get you where you want to go. If it is, great! If not, pick another “horse” and ride it.

Next, seek a coach or mentor to advise you on the tools or services that are “must have” to help you succeed and avoid the $3k Guru programs for now and just get practical advice. This doesn’t have to be expensive.

Finally, and this is actually first. Develop you inner game, your mindset. Who are you talking to, who are you connecting with and what books are you reading?

Honestly, hanging out on Facebook is not the secret to getting rich…great social media but you need to take action and implement. More on this later….

Some people asked all the time about how to make money and to be honest with you I hardly knew the answer for a long time. Backup Mike Bell made the most of his opportunity, starting in place of Reggie Bush and helping the New Orleans Saints romp to a 38-14 road victory over the Houston Texans. Bush was held out of the game with a strained calf, and Bell filled in admirably rushing for 100 yards in the easy victory.

Bell is a former Denver Broncos starter who has produced only 45 yards rushing in the past two seasons. He doubled that performance, and has the inside track to lock up the third running back roster spot. After the game, he talked about his big afternoon:

“I just wanted to show the team that I could come here and be a consistent running back. This kind of game was great because it reminds me that I can still play running back. Just to get the carries, and to make the most of this opportunity, that was a real confidence builder.”

Saints coach John Payton commended the effort, but said that it wasn’t a surprise:

“He really has done a really good job. I was encouraged again to see him playing so well.”

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak put the loss into perspective:

“It’s a humbling game. You can walk out of the stadium one week and feel good about yourself, and then walk out the next week and wonder what the heck is going on. We got pushed around. We have to play better than that up front in order to be successful.”

Linebacker DeMeco Ryan concurred:

“We take too much pride in what we do to go out and perform the way we did today. That’s not who we are.”

For the Saints, Drew Brees split time at QB with Mark Brunell. Brees was 9 of 14 for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Brunell was 5 of 6 for 96 yards. Brees had missed three days of practice last week to attend his mother’s funeral. P.J. Hill also got some reps at running back for the Saints, carrying the ball 8 times for 26 yards. Browns Use Big First Quarter To Beat Lions In NFL Preseason Play

The good news for the Cleveland Browns was that their offense came out swinging on Saturday night, scoring 20 points in the first quarter en route to victory. The bad news–it was against the NFL’s worst team and their struggling rookie QB. Browns QB Derek Anderson played well, while the Detroit Lions rookie signal caller Matt Stafford struggled mightily as the Browns easily took a 27-10 decision in NFL preseason action.

Anderson led the Browns to their first offensive touchdown in seven games, and left the Cleveland QB battle between himself and Brady Quinn a tossup. Anderson finished 8 of 11 for 130 yards and one interception, and gave a fairly positive assessment of his play in postgame interviews:

“I thought things went well. I played all right. I made some good throws and a couple I wish I could have back. It was an opportunity and I was happy to go out there and play well while I was in.”

After the game, Browns coach Eric Mangini deflected comments on which signal caller had the upper hand for the starting job:

“I’m really not going to assess it that way now. We’ll keep rolling along and move into next week and see where it goes.”

The NFLs first overall draft pick, Lions QB Matt Stafford tried to maintain an upbeat tone in his postgame comments:

“That’s what football is. You’ll play good some weeks and bad some weeks. The tough part about preseason is you get your allotted amount of plays. You can have a bad 25 plays and not get a chance to come back and fix it and make it right in the second half.”

Lions coach Jim Schwartz has the unenviable task of trying to turn around a team that went 0-16 last season, were that not bad enough he had to deal with the fallout of a fight during warm-ups between his own players. Carson Butler and Dewayne White went at it before the game. Schwartz sounded relatively unfazed by the bizarre turn of events:

“I’ve never seen that before.The thing I like about it is they were competitive and going hard. I came in and said, ‘Some of y’all thought the game started at 7 o’clock instead of 7:30.’ Obviously that’s something that shouldn’t happen and it’s already been addressed.”

Providing a good example of the lack of chemistry on a losing football franchise, White is still holding a grudge :

“We’ll probably have to go at it one more time when we’re not playing a game — next week sometime. There’s going to be bad blood between us.”

The Lions will continue their NFL preseason slate next Saturday night as they welcome the Indianapolis Colts to Ford Field. Cleveland will also play at home, with the Tennessee Titans providing the opposition. Both teams will open the NFL regular season on Sunday, September 13th with Cleveland hosting the Minnesota Vikings and the Lions traveling to New Orleans to take on the Saints.

The History Of Chicago’s Pump Room Restaurant

One of the few restaurants in the country to be immortalized in a Sinatra song, the Pump Room in Chicago is now a hot spot once again. The Pump Room was one of the first quality restaurants to open in Chicago after the end of Prohibition, and soon became a Windy City icon. In addition to Sinatra (who sang the praises of the place in the classic song Chicago), the place was a favorite hangout of a lot of famous people including Marilyn Monroe, Sammy Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Ronald Reagan, Bette Davis and numerous others. The Pump Room, named after a spa in Bath, England, remained open long after the giants that once graced its premises had left. Unfortunately, time took its toll on the legendary establishment, and its culinary fare was soon surpassed by the fine dining scene exploding in Chicago and characterized by uber-chef Charlie Trotter.

The Pump Room opened in’38 under the ownership and management of Ernie Blyfield. He took the name from an 18th century London pub favored by celebrities and nobility, including Queen Anne. The original pub got its name from the hot drinks pumped into the cocktails of its stylish clientele.

Blyfied’s Chicago Pump Room took off immediately, and its most sought after table–’Booth 1′ may have been the most desired spot of any dining establishment in the country for a time. Booth 1 was occupied by Sinatra and cronies like Jilly Rizzo, Judy Garland and daughter Liza Minnelli, Clark Gable, John Barrymore as well as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

Blyfield died in’50, but the Pump Room remained a Chicago hot spot and hosted a new era of superstars including Mel Brooks, Beverly Sills, Paul Newman, Robert Redford. More recently, Michael J. Fox, Eddie Murphy and Mick Jagger have made appearances. A funny story involves former Genesis drummer Phil Collins, who was refused entry for not wearing a jacket. The incident was commemorated in the title of his next solo album No Jacket Required which has since sold over– million copies worldwide and launched Collins into solo superstardom. Following its release, the Pump Room sent Collins an apology”and an appropriate jacket so that the incident wouldnt be repeated.

The Pump Room experienced a revitalization in the late’90’s when it was purchased by a large restaurant management group. They spent a lot of money to renovate the facility, overhaul the menu and hire a top flight staff. While the Pump Room’s golden era trade mark flaming food served on a sword was a tragedy of city fire codes, the menu is now on par with any in the city serving a sophisticated interpretation of classic American cuisine. In addition to the revamped cuisine, the Pump Room upgraded its wine offering and expanded the bar area.

Current Executive Chef Nick Sutton has continued the restaurant’s tradition of excellence. The big draw of the Pump Room, however, remains the amazing sense of history that the dining room offers. The realization that a who’s who of civilized American culture from Bogart and Clark Gable to Sinatra and Jackie Gleason broke bread in the room is a pretty amazing vibe. The good news is that the Pump Room again offers the quality of food and service worthy of such icons, and is a victory for culinary excellence amid the national infestation of mediocre chain restaurants.
